About Granite

Granite is a natural stone created by the slow cooling of molten rock beneath the earth's surface. It is composed of minerals including, but not limited to, quartz, feldspar and mica. It is mined from quarries typically found in the northeastern region of the United States, but may also come from Georgia, California, Idaho and South Dakota. Granite that is mined from a quarry can be made into kitchen counters. The mined stone is milled into long slabs for selection by the customer. Then, from the customer's specifications, the stone is cut to fit and installed in the home.

Granite is a very durable and strong material that can resist chipping and scratching and can withstand temperatures more than 450 degrees F. However, because of how it is formed, granite-stone is also porous and should be sealed to prevent staining and the absorption of liquids into the stone's surface. Coat the stone's surface with a sealant as often as needed, sometimes annually, depending on the stone's porosity and the quality of the sealant.

Some key points (key points) to remember:

  • Consider your cabinet color when choosing a stone color.
  • Make sure to select the style of edge for your countertops.
  • Granite is a natural substance, so expect some variation in color and pattern.
  • Seal your countertops for long-lasting results.
